Free, intuitive, meditative playing

Over time, the same wishes regarding handpan playing came up again and again.

  • How do I play for free?

  • How do I play intuitively and by feel, without thinking and without counting the beat ;) ?

  • How can I play meditatively or accompany yoga or meditation?

  • How can I play for a long time?

  • How do I develop beautiful melodies or pieces of music?

  • How do I add variety to my game?

  • How can I combine different melodies/grooves etc.?

  • How can I improvise?

  • How can I play everything I feel to fully express myself

I would like to cover all of this in this online course series "Free, intuitive, meditative playing".

There will be several modules that build on each other to get a holistic picture of this topic. This course is suitable for beginners and advanced learners.

For me it is important to say up front that free and intuitive playing is - in my opinion - something that develops over time, the more you play and the more you understand and internalize the basics of rhythm.

PS : On the subject of rhythm and how best to practice in order to better monitor your progress - in the future I will try to reach newbies right from the start with an intensive rhythm module and also try to help advanced players to gain a very strong rhythm foundation.

Personally, I'm a fan of counting (probably because my journey with drums began), especially when teaching, to create an understanding of where we are rhythmically when playing.

Over time, counting becomes an internal counting, a "bobbing" of the body, and at some point the counting happens subconsciously or becomes so internal to you that you no longer need to count consciously, you feel it inside you and are thus free from it.

I wanted to say that because it is still a musical instrument and some practice is necessary to reach this flow state.

(This is the state of complete absorption and effortless focus in which one is completely absorbed in an activity)

PS : Since the topic of wanting to approach the handpan without counting and without reading music comes up very often - I am currently working on something new (I don't know exactly in what form yet) to do justice to this approach :)

Important: Before you buy the course...

  • Please read the above text carefully about free, intuitive, meditative playing

  • The series "free, intuitive, meditative playing" consists of several modules that you can purchase individually or as a set

  • The courses are designed for the common handpan tuning D Kurd - but since these are universal concepts, they can also be transferred to any other tuning - but I have not explicitly shown or explained that in this series

  • The modules build on each other, but are also valuable as individual courses, as they contain a lot of content and concepts - with which you can quickly implement musical ideas and play small pieces and improvisations in each module

  • The online courses/modules are all pre-recorded, you have lifelong access to them and can watch and practice the videos at your own pace - each module contains a workbook in PDF format

  • Since I have accompanied yoga with the handpan from the beginning, my playing has developed very much in the direction of meditative, melodic and often calm and emotional playing - at least at this point ;)

  • In this series "meditative, free, intuitive play" I have tried to analyze my own game, take it apart and break it down step by step in order to be able to convey it in a way that is easy to understand.

  • PS : It is important for me to say that I tend to be very structured and try to explain everything in a visual and hopefully understandable way. As mentioned above, counting is also important to me in order to create an understanding of the rhythm - this may not be suitable for those who are more inclined to a very intuitive approach, to play from the beginning according to feeling and without "instructions".

Why I called the course "free, intuitive, meditative playing":

  • The handpan is actually an incredibly accessible instrument that produces beautiful sounds right from the start - and that's exactly what makes it so fascinating. Especially for beginners, it is possible to quickly play beautiful melodies and enjoy the sound with little experience.

  • However, it is important to understand that the path to truly free and intuitive play requires time, patience and practice. This freedom is not the starting point, but rather a goal that develops over time.

  • As with any instrument, a basic understanding of rhythm, timing and movement sequences is required in order to be able to develop confidently and creatively.

  • The great thing about it is that there is little frustration on the way there with the handpan compared to classical instruments such as the piano or guitar – even the first steps sound harmonious and enriching.

  • In this series I would like to give you everything that I think is important - to achieve this state of free, intuitive, meditative play and the flow state - and I am always open to questions in order to expand and further develop the course as needed :)
